Whether you prefer swimming, snorkeling, tubing, canoeing or kayaking, the crystal-clear waters of the San Marcos River are able to accommodate.

The limestone-purified waters are often compared to Caribbean quality visibility and the natural habitat of plant and animal life on the river allows for a scenic and relaxing adventure.

If you’re looking for a little more excitement, visit the newly renovated Rio Vista Dam to experience a small whitewater park.

In Dec. 2005, the City of San Marcos redesigned the dam into a series of drops to enhance the river flow and recreational value of the popular swimming hole, as well as the safety and longevity of the structure. The $2.1 million project was completed in May 2006.

The remodeled dam has three separate tube chutes with pools of water between each drop structure. Rocks lining the banks provide additional access to the river and the right bank is now graded back and terraced to provide a sunbathing and spectator area.

The strongest of the three, the first tube shoot is a favorite for kayakers, who surf the recirculating waves repeatedly. Visitors to the park need to know that the Rio Vista Dam chutes possess a strong flow and swimmers should use caution. Wearing river shoes or sandals with heel straps and keeping a close watch on young children are highly advised.
